Can A Tailor Lengthen The Sleeves On My Leather Jacket?
ByI am a tall guy and I have monkey arms; well, not really but standing at 6′5, my arms are certainly longer than most. I am a size medium and I want to invest in a leather jacket for this fast approaching Chicago winter. I know it’s tough to tailor a leather jacket, so I’m going to get the medium that fits, but I know the sleeves will be about an inch and maybe one-half too short. Can I take it to a tailor to get the sleeves *lengthened*? How? If not, are there other options?

a tailor will probably not be able to lengthen your jacket. I was recently coat shopping with my husband though and you have the option of getting your size with longer arms. 40-Long for example. you may want to invest in a higher priced coat that will fit you or shop at a big and tall store. another option is to get a coat that fits your arms and have the tailor fix everything else to fit you. the only other thing i can think of is to have the tailor add the detail that’s common on some coats that make the sleeves sweater-like. i think bomber jackets have the feature.

Check to see if the sleeves have material folded inside the jacket. If it’s a lot of material, like, an inch and a half, then the tailor may be able to lengthen it. It might be easier to shop at a Big+Tall kind of store, or even to get the size that fits your arms and have the rest of it tailored in. A good rule is to fit the largest part of your body, so that things can be taken in.
